Insurer’s lawyers acted for Ms. Mung Ka Wai, a local star, to defend a claim by a plaintiff (the victim) for HK$4 million arising from a motor accident.
The insurer immediately admitted liability of the claim and made a powerful settlement offer of about HK$620,000 few months after the commencement of the legal action.
The victim unwisely rejected the offer. The insurer successfully reduced the victim's claim to about HK$500,000 at the assessment hearing (supported by evidence from medical experts and private investigator). .
Accordingly, the victim was ordered to fully refund a surplus of over-paid damage in about HK$120,000 plus interest; and to pay most legal costs (incurred over HK$2 million).
To enforce the order, the insurer successfully froze the victim's property by subsequent bankruptcy proceedings
